Games That Never Fully Released: Remember when we discussed why it is so important for game development companies to provide early access to their unfinished games to the audience? Because that provides direction to the future of the game and its success. But is there any game that has been out for early access, but then no final game was released? If yes, then what exactly was the reason for its failure?
Well, it might be a very rare case, but there have been a handful of games that fall under this category. No matter how uncommon this is, some games do not even make it to their 1.0 release. And today, we are going to share the names of these games along with the reason for their discontinued production with you.
Video games that never fully released
The Stomping Land
The Stomping Land, where the players were hunted, tamed, and survived among dinosaurs, was a multiplayer survival game. This one dates back to more than a decade when its early access was made available in May 2014. Surprisingly, the early access also did pretty well with the users. Seeing the good response to the game from gamers, the game development company promised regular updates and much more from their end to keep the game interesting.

But as soon as the promises were made, things went downhill and the lead developer of The Stomping Land, Alex “Jig” Fundora, went all silent. No new update, improvement, or even clarification came from the development team. A game that looked promising and had hopes for a high future then received a lot of backlash. Its available early access part was then pulled out of the Steam community and till date no one knows what went wrong with this one.
Godus
Not all early access games have vanished from the internet. Some are still there, considered incomplete because they might be. But still available like Godus. In 2013, Godus released its early access installment on Steam. The project that started developing in 2012, got a lot of views, corrections, mixed reactions, negativity, and so much more. The game potentially lost its originality.

The game did release on Steam in 2016 with the name Godus Wars. That’s because the developers promised a new and better version of the game with all public suggestions included. But even this one was an early access and not the entire game. Godus Wars also met with the same fate as Godus. So, the actual game never got the chance to release.
In 2023, the early access versions of Godus and Godus Wars were removed from Steam. The game is still available to play on mobile phones, but according to players, it is still unfinished. If you play it, let us know how you feel about this one.
Town of Night
In November 2016, this indie game title called Town of Night came out with its early access and has not seen any development since then. A zombie survival game released on Early Access, Town of Night was a first-person RPG dungeoncrawler that received mixed reviews from users during its early access stage. The developers did not quickly decide to abandon the game. They did make some updates to it. But even then, there was no good news related to it, and it is still in its early access state since 2016.

Whatever was made by the developers in its early access, that part of the game is still available on Steam to play. However, the game does not involve any major reason for cancellation or abandonment. But there is still speculation that mixed reviews were the reasons for its discontinuity. If you ever plan to play this one, do let us know what your thoughts are on Town of Night. Are you in the criticism part of the audience or the appreciating part of the crowd?
To Sum Up: Games That Never Fully Released
There are multiple reasons for a game to become a failure. But incidents like these have been very rare where the game did not proceed after launching early access. While some reasons for the discontinuity of these games are understandable, there are still 1–2 games that stopped development abruptly and no one knows why. Do you have any idea about them?
