Try before you buy: Have you heard about Google Play Store’s new update? Well, the update is not live yet but its news is surely making the rounds of the internet, making everyone go crazy. The update is regarding free game trials being available on Google Play Store for paid games.
Yes, you heard it right. Within the first week of 2026, Google Play Store has announced free game trials for everyone. If you wish to buy a game but still want to try it before you pun in your money, you can try it all you want.
The new update that is coming soon, will give its users the facility of knowing exactly what they are buying. Let’s know what’s more to it and how beneficial this is for gamers and Google altogether.
Free game trials on Google Play Store
On Friday, 9th January 2026, an announcement came out through a report by the Android Authority. According to the report, APK teardown of the Google Play Store version 49.6.19-29 has multiple strings. And most of these strings mention a new ‘Try before you buy’ feature for games.
Sounds exciting, right? But the report doesn’t end here. Another string, ‘Pick up where you left off if you decide to buy,’ has also been discovered through the teardown. This string suggests that any progress in the game trial that you make during the Google Play Store paid game purchase will carry over once you make the full payment and unlock the full version of the game.

The Android Authority report also mentions how developers have the full right to choose the duration of the trial before you buy the game. It can range from a few minutes to lengthy hours. Not just that, but they can also set the limit for these trials. Meaning once the trial limit is exhausted, ‘You already used the trial’ message can pop up, forcing the user to either buy the game to play more of it, or stop exploiting the services.
But, this ‘limited trial attempts’ feature is completely optional. Game developers can choose how they want these free game trials to go ahead.
How is the ‘Try before you buy’ feature going to benefit Google, gamers, and developers globally?
With this news breaking out from the Android Authority website, a leading independent online publication and media brand, everyone started discussing the benefits of this latest update.
It has often been noticed how people have been hesitant about buying new games. And this friction between product and consumer is majorly because players want to know where exactly they are spending their money.
Usually, the AAA title games are a bit pricy and not affordable for everyone. But once this feature is enabled, consumers will be able to play the game before investing their money in it. And if they don’t like the game trial using the Try before you buy feature, they can simply drop the plan of spending money on it.

Developers, on the other hand, will benefit a lot more with the Try before you buy feature. That’s because they will no longer have to create special demo games for the audience. The demos can be made available via this feature.
And then, they will be selling their games to the genuine buyers and appreciators of their game product, and not any random person. This means that these game trials before purchase would not require a separate app listing like it used to be with a demo game. The ‘Try before you buy’ feature will simply allow users to experience the complete game as it is. The game progression can then be continued naturally by the gamer when the entire game is purchased.
Talking about Google’s benefits. The biggest benefit for Google Play Store would be to bring genuine products to genuine customers. No doubts, no second thoughts, and especially no frauds. Just a simple update to make everyone happy.
