Rajya Sabha Passes Bill Banning Real Money Games: On Thursday, 21st August 2025, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, was passed by the members of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. The bill successfully cleared the debate in both the houses of Parliament. It is now headed to be present to President Draupadi Murmu for the final clearance before it becomes an Act.

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 is a means of regulating online gaming and risks related to it. Through this bill, the government is trying to control the damage that is caused by betting and gambling taking place through online games. In many cases, people have lost their loves due to mental and financial issues related to the real-money gaming.

Despite a lot of nuisances created by the opposition, the leading party carried out the bill in the upper house of Parliament clause-by-clause. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw stated in the Parliament the need to regulate this sector of games for the betterment of people.

He stated how money-based games are destroying families by addicting people to malpractices and risking all of their finances into gaming. He urged his fellow MPs to support the bill fully. To help bring in this reform in the department of Information and Technology. Therefore, families can be saved from getting destroyed at the hands of addiction. The sever financial crisis leading people towards suicides because of this can be stopped.

He also mentioned that once it becomes an Act, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill will not be delayed at all. Its enforcement will be done as soon as it gets signed by the Honorable President of India. It is important to enforce the bill immediately. So it will not see any delays like other bills proposed by the Information and Technology Ministry.

Once the Bill becomes an Act, The respective Ministries will promote eSports. That is to sustain skill based and competitive gaming, said Ashwini Vaishnaw in his address.

The entire pay-to-play stakes-based gaming are on the verge of collapsing after the new bill came into limelight. Once the Bill get signed by President Murmu, it will become an Act. It will then affect main revenue generating activity of firms like firms like Dream11, MPL and PokerBaazi’s and many more.

According to sources, the RMG industry has approached Home Minister Amit Shah through a letter. The official statement is yet to be confirmed. In the letter, they have appealed to him to postpone the bill. It is said that the bill will affect the RMG (real money gaming) industry severely. People will lose investments and jobs simultaneously across the country.
