Online Gaming Bill Challenged? Know All About Its Proceedings

Online Gaming Bill Challenged: On 20th August 2025, the Government of India introduced a new law for real-money-based gaming in India. The bill was presented in Parliament by Modi Government. It seamlessly got clearance one by one from the lower and upper houses of Parliament. On 22nd August, Friday, President Draupadi Murmu also signed the new gaming law. That made it a new Act for the entire country.

The ongoing situation

With a ban on real-money-based online games, the entire industry is on the verge of collapse. That’s because a huge amount of investors’ money is at stake. Some companies and stakeholders in real-money-based online games are upset about categorizing these games under the betting and gambling section by the GOI.

Some have presented their concerns in front of the government and asked them to rectify the bill again. They have also pleaded for some leniency from the government’s side. Since the GOI has also taxed online gaming with 40% GST under the GST 2.0 announcement. But the Modi-led BJP government is yet to change their decisions or modify the laws.

The legal battle: Online Gaming Bill Challenged

Amid all this tension, A23, India’s leading online gaming platform, has filed a lawsuit against the bill in Karnataka High Court. The lawsuit was filed on 28th August 2025, objecting to the criminalization of legitimate real-money-based online gaming businesses.

While standing against the online gaming bill 2025, A23 has urged that the bill would cost closure for various gaming companies. Resulting in an overnight disaster for the stakeholders of real-money-based gaming companies and the people employed by these businesses.

A23 called games like rummy and poker skill-based games and not gambling games. They have also requested the Karnataka High Court in their lawsuit to declare the bill unconstitutional. With a user base of more than 70 million people worldwide, A23.com is worried about its sustenance. Currently, it is the only company that has challenged the government’s order legally.

The favoring parties: Online Gaming Bill Challenged

On one hand, A23 is in a legal battle with GOI. On the other hand, other similar businesses like Dream11, MPL, and GamesKraft have shown their respect and support for the government’s decision. Neither have they challenged, nor have they condemned, the new Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025 Act.

Instead of dwelling on the past and being upset with the new laws, these and many other firms are focusing on how they can use this opportunity for their benefit. They are looking for other ways in which the company can sustain and make money. All this while staying within the limits of the new rules.

With all this happening, it will be interesting to know how things will unfold in future for the Gaming Act 2025. So, do you support the new Gaming Act or are you in favor of companies like A23? Do let us know in the comments. For more latest updates on this story, stay tuned to mgcbuzz.com
