For the first time since the 1990s, when the Indian gaming market started developing, the industry has seen an annual revenue of $1 billion. Last year’s major revenue milestone created room for a lot of appreciation and a look-through at what happened in the gaming industry of India. While the monetization base remains in its early stages, there are a lot of other factors that have built up the industry to where it stands today.
What caused the revenue boom in the Indian gaming market?
There have been multiple reasons that contributed to the revenue boom in the Indian gaming sector. These include:
Increase in gaming genres in India
The Indian audience is getting attracted to more and more games rather than just Battle Royale games. Even the casual mobile gaming sector of India has seen a shift in players. The shift in audience has majorly contributed to the esport industry, which has shown people more and more games and how that can be super exciting too. Games like Grand Theft Auto, Roblox and Minecraft have caught most of the attention of Indian players. All this resulting in more and more people trying out new games, which forces the market to change its course according to user demand.
Mobile games taking the lead
Game developer companies are making more and more games mobile friendly. This helped a lot of players to try new games while not having to sit in front of the PC or console the entire time.
Digital purchases of the game
A major credit to the UPI industry of India. That is, for making it easier for gamers to purchase games and in-game accessories. With advanced UPI methods, a lot more people have been involved in purchasing games and playing them however they like. This has also created a domino effect in the industry. Where not just games are purchased via online transactions. But gaming gear is also purchased so that the video game can be enjoyed thoroughly with the right equipment.
What do the statistics suggest?
If we look at the reports and statistics on this matter, they suggest a five-year CAGR of 11.2%. With nearly $1.2 billion in revenue generation in the current year 2026, growing to $1.77 billion by 2030.
Another study has also suggested that the increase in the number of female players in India has significantly contributed towards the growth of the gaming industry. According to a 2025 report, India is a home to 511 million players. Of these 511 million gamers, just 43% of them used to be female players. But the new report has suggested how this number has increased to 49% in 2026. A straight 6% increase in the female players from 2023 till now.
