New Zealand Game Industry: Recently, a new story came out claiming New Zealand’s game development industry has achieved its target ahead of its predicted date. In 2026, the New Zealand gaming industry exceeded $1 billion in revenue. The sector reached this set milestone two years ahead of its 2028 schedule.
What’s happening in the New Zealand Game Industry
For the first time in New Zealand, its entertainment sector can leave the primary sector behind in revenue. The creative, digital, and tech sectors of the country are all set to make this history. And this news is a bit shocking for everyone in the country.
New Zealand is majorly known for its wool industry and the massive revenue it brings in. But, according to the sources, after the 2023 tax rebate introduction in NZ, the country’s gaming sector has successfully surpassed the country’s wool sector. Another major shock for the officials.
Where did it all start?
In 2023, the New Zealand Government initiated financial incentives for the country’s gaming sector. For its development they launched Game Development Sector Rebate (GDSR). This initiative was taken to support and grow the local interactive gaming industry.
The goal was to support local game developers by funding their game development via government initiatives. Through this initiative, the NZ government would receive an estimated eight-to-one return on each dollar invested through these funding streams.
According to the predicition, the New Zealand Game Developers Association (NZGDA) had a target for the New Zealand’s Game Development Sector Rebate (GDSR). This deadline of the target was set for 2028. In the year of its introduction, the Game Development Sector Rebate (GDSR), saw a 7% growth in its revenue. The association reached $270.9 million in revenue in its starting year.
In 2024, the New Zealand Game Developers Association (NZGDA) generated $758.9 million in revenue. This caused a 29% hike in workforce size of the association. The news came to the light by the CEO of CerebralFix, Chelsea Rapp. A game development studio in New Zealand. She further noted, “We love to say that we’re going to be a billion-dollar industry by 2026. We have between 28% and 35% growth annually, so if we keep with that, then it’ll be 2025-26.”
